Re: Carleton Must Take Immediate Action to Remove Threat Posed by Convicted Terrorist
Dear Dr. Tomberlin,
I am writing to express my profound disappointment and increasing alarm over the continued employment of Dr. Hassan Diab at Carleton University.
The university’s decision to welcome a convicted terrorist onto its campus and into its classrooms is impossible to comprehend.
In 2023, Dr. Diab was convicted of carrying out a horrific PFLP terrorist attack against a synagogue in Paris in 1980. This attack by the PFLP, a listed terrorist entity here in Canada, murdered four innocent civilians and wounded many more.
In France, Dr. Diab was tried and convicted of terrorism, receiving a sentence of life imprisonment for his crimes. In Canada, he reaps the rewards of a free and happy life—and the honour of teaching in Carleton’s Sociology and Anthropology Department.
It is particularly concerning that the university has ignored B’nai Brith Canada’s formal request to terminate Dr. Diab’s position. Your silence signals a troubling disregard for the Canadian values of accountability, integrity, and inclusion—values that should be foundational to any educational institution—and raises significant questions regarding Carleton’s dedication to the safety and well-being of its students and staff.
I urge you to reconsider the employment of Dr. Diab and to take immediate action to uphold the university’s commitment to ensuring a healthy and supportive learning environment for all students.

Je vous écris pour exprimer ma profonde déception et mon inquiétude croissante face à l’emploi continu de Dr Hassan Diab à l’Université Carleton.
La décision de l’université d’accueillir un terroriste condamné sur son campus et dans ses salles de classe est incompréhensible.
En 2023, Dr Diab a été reconnu coupable d’avoir perpétré une attaque terroriste effroyable du FPLP contre une synagogue à Paris en 1980. Cette attaque, menée par le FPLP, une entité terroriste répertoriée au Canada, a tué quatre civils innocents et blessé de nombreuses autres personnes.
En France, Dr Diab a été jugé et reconnu coupable de terrorisme et a été condamné à la réclusion à perpétuité pour ses crimes. Au Canada, il profite d’une vie libre et heureuse—et de l’honneur d’enseigner au Département de sociologie et d’anthropologie de Carleton.
Il est particulièrement préoccupant que l’université ait ignoré la demande formelle de B’nai Brith Canada visant à mettre fin au poste de Dr Diab. Votre silence reflète un inquiétant manque de respect pour les valeurs canadiennes de responsabilité, d’intégrité et d’inclusion—des valeurs qui devraient être au cœur de toute institution éducative—et soulève de graves questions quant à l’engagement de Carleton envers la sécurité et le bien-être de ses étudiants et de son personnel.
Je vous exhorte à reconsidérer l’emploi de Dr Diab et à prendre des mesures immédiates pour honorer l’engagement de l’université à garantir un environnement d’apprentissage sain et solidaire pour tous les étudiants.
