B’nai Brith Canada’s Statement on Birju Dattani’s Appointment as Head of the Canadian Human Rights Commission:
The recent appointment of Birju Dattani as the head of the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) is yet another troubling example of the shortcomings of our federal government’s vetting process. This trend is putting the sanctity and security of our democracy, and the well-being of all Canadians, at risk.
The information that has come to light since the appointment of Mr. Dattani, including his associations with individuals linked to terrorist groups and radical organizations, as well as his history of making antisemitic and un-Canadian remarks, suggest that he is an unfit candidate for the role. His inadequate response to these allegations lends further credence to the notion that he should not have been appointed to lead the CHRC.
At a time of heightened divisions and rising levels of antisemitism in Canada, it is essential that the Human Rights Commissioner be a leader who represents Canadian values. These principles are essential for Canadians to trust in the CHRC’s ability to advocate for human rights and combat discrimination.
We demand that the government rescind Mr. Dattani’s appointment and immediately commence an investigation into its vetting process.
