Yom HaShoah Commemoration:
National Holocaust Monument
Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, is a solemn moment for us to honour the memory of the six million Jews murdered in the Holocaust, and to remember the countless others targeted by the Nazi regime.
This year’s ceremony, organized by the National Holocaust Committee, marks a moment of profound historical significance: the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau—the most infamous Nazi death camp and enduring symbol of humanity’s capacity for cruelty.
This year’s commemoration will pay special tribute to the profound tragedy endured by Greek Jewry, the majority of whom were deported to Auschwitz. By the end of World War II, between 82% and 92% of Greek Jews had been murdered—one of the highest death rates in Europe.
Program highlights will include:
- Keynote Address
Her Excellency Ekaterina Dimakis, Ambassador of Greece
- Musical Tribute
Song of Songs from Ballad of Mauthausen by Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, performed by Elie Manousakis (Montreal), accompanied by the Young String Performers in Concert, directed by Joan Milkson
- Special Presentation
Hannah Alberga, granddaughter of David Moskovic, Ottawa’s oldest living Holocaust survivor
Provincial political leaders, Mayor Sutcliffe, Ambassador Moed, and Ottawa Holocaust survivors and families will be in attendance. Fran Sonshine, Past President of the Canadian Society for Yad Vashem, and founding member of The National Holocaust Monument, will deliver closing remarks.
