THANK YOU B’nai Brith for 150 years of your Mitzvot. The world is a better place for your collective talent and assiduous efforts! Yasher Koach and here’s to the next 150!
My Mitzvot: Over decades, I continue daily to provide personal care, shop for and deliver food, medical and other supplies to disabled and elderly people. I perform music in senior’s residences, sing at and organize Holocaust concerts and offer lectures. I engage in human rights (HR) public policy work, fight Jew Hatred, collect and donate clothing, fundraise and advocate for Israel, for courageous HR journalists, activists, dissidents.
BRAVO B’nai Brith for collecting Mitzvot testimonies, further inspiring Tikun Olam.
I am able to donate a ‘significant’ amount of money to ‘good’ charities, roughly three quarters to Israel & one quarter to Canada

Registered the domain DrugHarms.org to provide free and quick access to a ranking of legal and illegal recreational drugs according to their harms. This is important for the general public and policy makers.

Gathering the discarded clothing from the Toronto Marathon runners with B’nai Brith Canada, I felt a quiet satisfaction knowing it wouldn’t go to waste. By diverting it from landfill and donating it to those in need, each item was given a second purpose—turning a simple cleanup into something meaningful.

B’nai Brith Canada food bank delivery driver – “I love helping people not only with the deliveries but also with the emotional side as I’m sometimes their only visitor for the week so get to spend time with wonderful people and bring some light into their lives.”

Todd and Jacquie have been amazing volunteers for the B’nai Brith Canada Winnipeg Weekly food program and have been volunteering since the beginning.
They also volunteer with the B’nai Brith Canada Winnipeg Holiday food programs for Rosh HaShanah and Chanukah.

I have a long history of volunteerism with many organizations both Jewish and secular. It is my personal policy that giving of myself in a “hands-on” manner is much more meaningful than simply donating money and this is what I endeavour to do wherever it is feasible. The B’nai Brith Canada Food program gives me the additional benefit of meeting face to face with the people I am helping and this is most satisfying.

“I like helping people and being a part of a community. Kavod staff are very nice people to work with. I like to learn and experience new things.
My co-workers/volunteers are helpful and nice people. Kavod is a place to gain great work experience.”

I like to volunteer because it gives me a chance to help others and make a positive difference in my community. Volunteering helps me learn new skills, meet new people, and feel good knowing that I am doing something meaningful. It also gives me experience that I can use in my personal and professional life.

The ladies are taking the time to help fix a sweater at the B’nai Brith Canada Montreal Seniors Knitting Club.

This week at B’nai Brith Canada’s Montreal Seniors Knitting Club, Yudit happily helped knitting members learn how to not only knit new projects, but also crochet!

I volunteer to help the community, we can provide food to seniors who are not able to get access to food.

Spending a few hours (if that), once a week, delivering to people who deserve so much more, gives me immense satisfaction. They are all so appreciative of not only the food, but the weekly contact with someone who cares. It doesn’t get much better than that!

I am so happy to be a part of B’nai Brith Canada’s wonderful initiative that provides food to vulnerable members of our community. I enjoy the weekly visits with the recipients and it feels good knowing that I can make a difference in their lives.

This week at the B’nai Brith Canada’s Montreal Knitting Club, Yudit completed 2 blankets for the IDF soldiers.

Jewish Child and Family Service (JCFS) Winnipeg extends our heartfelt thanks to B’nai Brith Canada for its meaningful partnership and ongoing support. Your generosity helps ensure that vulnerable members of our community are not forgotten — especially during times of Jewish celebration and times of need. Through your partnership with holiday food baskets at Hanukkah and Rosh Hashanah, many vulnerable individuals and families in our community are able to experience the joy, dignity, and comfort of our Jewish traditions.
In addition, your new Kavod store is helping provide essential clothing and basic necessities for our clients throughout the year. These supports bring real relief and compassion to those facing financial hardship, including newcomers, seniors, and other low-income families.
B’nai Brith Canada’s commitment to chesed (loving-kindness) strengthens the safety net that JCFS works to uphold every day.
We are deeply grateful for your continued partnership and your unwavering dedication to the Jewish community in Winnipeg and beyond.
I volunteer because B’nai Brith Canada is a wonderful organization and if they need volunteers I’m there for them.
I generally am a sorter for the clothing drives and am always thrilled with the volume and quality of the clothing that is donated by the community. It helps give people dignity when they come to the pop-up shop. I volunteer where I can and try and do outreach for B’nai Brith Canada.

I volunteer for B’nai Brith Canada Food Program in Toronto because I like to help people and I’m retired. I like doing a mitzvah.

Day Care children at David & Ruth Asper Early Learning Centre did an incredible mitzvah where they created Chanukah cards for our 100 Chanukah food bags.
I recently went through my closet and filled a bag with gently used clothing, hoping it will go to someone who truly needs it. I always donate to B’nai Brith because their pop-up shops ensure the clothing reaches those in need. It’s comforting to know my contributions are making a difference in someone’s life.
Donation to B’nai Brith

Combining good deeds with personal enjoyment is always a great combination. In this regard on a couple of occasions this year I “secretly” shoveled ice and snow off the driveways of my neighbors. Good and useful exercise.

We donated food to the local church’s food bank to support those in need. We are happy to participate in this campaign. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference in our community.

For the past three years, we’ve been coming every week to help pack food boxes with B’nai Brith Canada’s food program. We loved the sense of community, the amazing people who showed up, and the feeling of giving back. When we delivered the boxes, seeing the joy on people’s faces was incredibly rewarding.

Alon wants to help his community by delivering food boxes for the B’nai Brith Canada Food Program.

Rost is a newcomer from Israel. He joined our food program a month ago and he’s very happy to help with this project and enjoys being involved in the Community programs.
Marvin has been volunteering since the beginning of the food program, for more than 3 years. He said that it makes him feel good to do a mitzvah like this while helping people in need .

I enjoy volunteering with Kavod to gain work experience and expanded my skill set. I also like giving back to the community. Kavod has had a very welcoming environment with friendly staff.

“I volunteer because it keeps me grounded in the community as I pursue my career goals.” – Kavod Volunteer

At B’nai Brith Canada’s Montreal Seniors Knitting Program, Alice knit a hat for Nathalie (who is the picture wearing the knitted hat).

This is Wendy. She was seeing all the news about the Winnipeg wildfires and the thousands of people being evacuated from their homes. She really wanted to help but was unsure how. Then she saw the Kavod Thrift Store post on Facebook asking for people to deliver the donations Kavod had collected. She was so happy to help and did three deliveries for Kavod!! Above and beyond!

This is Susan. She took not one, but two carloads of items for Winnipeg evacuees to the drop off centre yesterday. She told Kavod that she worked 10 minutes away from the store and could help out again anytime.

I volunteer at the B’nai Brith Canada Toronto food bank for the camaraderie and it makes me feel good to give back to the community.

I wanted to make a contribution to our community other than making donations. Once I did my first round, I got a sense of how important it was for the recipients of the food parcels. I felt good about the effort but also how privileged a life I lead.

Especially in these difficult times, I volunteer with B’nai Brith Canada, delivering food boxes because it gives me the opportunity to give back to my Jewish community. This is a way to support my Jewish Elders who are in need; they appreciate not only the food, but the warm connection we both feel when I deliver B’nai Brith Canada’s beautiful box of food. Volunteering fills my heart!

I enjoy volunteering for B’nai Brith Canada and I am happy to offer my services whenever I am called upon. I am a shy person and walking into a room where I don’t know anyone helps me to become more outgoing. I have met so many nice people and some are now friends. I have been delivering food boxes and the smile on the clients faces makes me feel good all day. I try to engage in conversation with the clients and I know they are so happy to have someone to talk to. Today, I spoke to 2 lovely women and I know they enjoyed it as much as I did. I really appreciate the opportunity to volunteer for such a worth while organization as B’nai Brith Canada.

I volunteered at Kavod mainly to gain some new skills and experience, but my true motivation was to support the community through volunteering. I also contributed by donating gently used clothing to help others. My goal is to create a positive and enjoyable shopping experience for everyone, making sure visitors feel welcomed and valued during their visit.
“I enjoy doing volunteering work for B’nai Brith Canada because it’s for a good cause and it’s a good organization” – B’nai Brith Canada Volunteer

“Our long-time volunteer at Kavod, Yizhe and his aide Kevin came to Kavod Thrift Store with roses yesterday. They said it was for National Boss Day! They had cards for each one of us and said what a joy it’s been working alongside us!” – Naomi, Kavod Store Manager

The Jewish Federation Women’s Philanthropy group dropped off several bags of clothing donations as well as some books to Kavod Thrift Store. They chose Kavod as the recipient of their Mitzvah for National Mitzvah Day!
Toba is one of B’nai Brith Canada’s incredible pop-up shop volunteers, and her dedication continues to inspire us. After noticing a high demand for children’s winter jackets and snowsuits at our recent pop-up shops, she took it upon herself to donate brand-new outerwear for kids in need.
Her thoughtful mitzvah made a meaningful difference, every jacket and snowsuit was distributed at our last pop-up shop to families who needed them most.
Thank you, Toba, for your generosity, compassion, and unwavering support of our community. Your kindness truly warms more than just the winter season.
For the past year, I’ve had the privilege of delivering food boxes for the B’nai Brith Food Program, and each time, I’m met with heartfelt gratitude from the recipient. It’s truly inspiring to witness the joy these food boxes bring to our community.
These weekly deliveries provide essential groceries at no cost to those in need, offering support and comfort in challenging times. Being part of this initiative has been a meaningful way to give back and contribute as a volunteer within the Jewish community.
A Winnipeg volunteer on his way to deliver food for B’nai Brith’s weekly food program.

I’ve had the honour and pleasure of volunteering this Winter with the Track 3 organization — accompanying teens and young adults with disabilities every weekend as we cross-country ski, snowshoe or hike in Earl Bales park! We just celebrated the completion of the 2025 program and it was a joy to witness each athlete getting their medal for participating in the program.
Remembrance is a powerful thing. Just as we recall the evil of Amalek many centuries ago, we will never forget October 7th and the ongoing attempts to persecute the Jewish people.

As a part of the Centre Wellington DHS environmental action month, our Canadian History class participated in “Garbage Clean Up Week”. We went around the entire school property and collected 5lbs.
Thanks for allowing us the opportunity to share, and to be a part of the 150th celebrations of B’nai Brith Canada. It gives our class the opportunity to spotlight vibrant communities that continue to be such an important part of Canada’s history. Thank you for your continued work as Canada’s oldest human rights organization.

Our family picked tulips and prepared bouquets that we later brought to seniors for mother’s day!

One of our incredible food delivery drivers for the B’nai Brith Canada food program, says he delivers food boxes to Seniors because “Doing this makes me feel better about myself.”

Shelly and Bruce are super shoppers for the B’nai Brith Canada food program in Edmonton, Alberta. Every second Wednesday for the last 3 years they have volunteered by religiously searching out bargains, in order for B’nai Brith Canada in Edmonton to provide the most nutritious food at a cost savings price for the food program.

“It has been a rewarding experience in Kavod for the last 6 months. As a newcomer in Winnipeg, people in Kavod make me feel welcome. I enjoy working here, chatting with coworkers and discovering many vintage items from the donation items. I sincerely hope that Kavod will succeed and that more and more volunteers will join us.”

“Volunteering at Kavod thrift store has been a meaningful experience for me. It promotes sustainability by giving old clothes a second life. It’s also been surprisingly interesting to come across items I wouldn’t normally notice, which has broadened my perspective. On top of that, the environment is really friendly – everyone is kind, welcoming, and supportive, which makes volunteering there more enjoyable.”

This is Michele. Not only did he respond to Kavod’s callout for volunteers to deliver items to the Winnipeg evacuee shelters yesterday, he also agreed to come back today! He’s delivering all our donations for the Gwen Sector senior centre’s annual garage sale fundraiser!! We joked with him that now we know someone with a truck, he can expect to get called on again! He said he’d be happy to help in the future too!!

Yesterday, I had the honor of delivering a food box to a blind gentleman. He kindly invited me into his apartment and asked for help unpacking the refrigerated items. During our conversation, he asked if I enjoyed music. I told him I did—and shared that I’m a musician and singer. With a smile, he brought out his digital accordion and began to play for me.
We spent about half an hour in his living room as he performed a beautiful selection of Yiddish, Hebrew, and Fiddler on the Roof songs. We sang and laughed together, and the experience was so moving and truly heartwarming. I’m looking forward to visiting him regularly so we can continue to share music and joy together.

Volunteering with B’nai Brith Canada has shown me how even small efforts can mean a lot to someone. I always walk away feeling thankful for the chance to help and for being part of something that really makes a difference.

It is very rewarding to help bring a little food security to people in our community who are most vulnerable, and the friendship and connections that we have developed bring me great joy each week!

In terms of why I volunteer for B’nai Brith Canada… Volunteering creates a sense of purpose, and I find a sense of belonging with the Jewish community. I am passionate about helping others less fortunate, and ultimately, it helps me gain a sense of gratitude for all of the blessings bestowed upon me from Hashem.

Hi, my name’s Juliana, and I volunteer at Kavod Thrift store because I love thrifting, and giving back to the community! Kavod’s mission is one that I am thrilled to support.

Volunteering lets us have a date night during the day! The people there appreciate us. Volunteering at the bingo halls is out of our comfort zone not something we would normally do, but we really enjoy it. – B’nai Brith Canada Bingo Ambassador

I was assigned to patrol empty vacant homes in the city of Brampton. Upon entering the basement of one of the homes, there were x3 kittens bundled together shivering, voicing their little cries and abandoned. I knew I couldn’t leave them behind.
My wife Shania and I decided to adopt the x3 kittens and give them a wonderful home. They are cared for, well-fed, and most importantly, they are family now. They are loved and we couldn’t imagine our lives without them.

On Wednesday, November 26 the B’nai Brith Canada Winnipeg team volunteered for Ronald McDonald House’s (RMHC) Home Sweet Home program. Where we baked 12 dozen cookies for the families temporarily staying at RMHC while their child is at Children’s Hospital. An incredible experience to participate in National Mitzvah Day for such a worthy cause!
Dorothy works closely with lingerie companies, Arie, etc. who run a return recycling program. The bras collected are personally washed by her and then are distributed to various shelters and organizations. During B’nai Brith Canada’s Pop-up Shops, Dorothy makes sure to provide us with bras for those in need. In September, Dorothy gave over 200 bras to our pop-up shop, which were so appreciated by those who attended. No bras were left at the end of the pop-up shop, which just shows how needed they were. Thank you Dorothy for your incredible mitzvah!
Mitzvah Day 2024 was a huge success, and this year, we reached nearly 1,700 people in the GTA, marking a more than 40% increase over last year’s efforts. We supported incredible organizations including Ve’ahavta, Chai Lifeline, Fill a Purse for a Sister, and JIAS.
Our volunteers also organized the second Annual Mitzvah Day Family Bingo event for the residents of the NCJWC Toronto Foundation building and a teen committee of volunteers hosted a carnival day at DANI. The Mitzvah Knitters contributed baby blankets for newcomers.
This project fosters stronger connections and brighter futures within our community.
It happened today I was in the bank, I saw a friend there, we talked, by the end of the conversation he was very happy to do a Mitzvah and put on Teffilin.

Food donation to the food bank organized by the St. Anthony of Padua Church in Ottawa.

I try to make it a habit of thanking the service staff in all sorts of establishments, for instance by pressing the green buttons of those machines in supermarkets. It is easy to hit the red ones if one is not happy, but is just as simple to signal (also to the superiors of the staff on the ground) that all was good or even very good.

Love delivering for the Food Program at B’nai Brith Canada – as a new volunteer this is such a rewarding experience!

For this week’s mitzvah comes from Helen, who donated yarn to the B’nai Brith Canada Montreal office knitting club and knit for IDF soldiers.
Helen: “Whatever you’re knitting for Israel always works out. The pattern, the length, the wool—you never need to worry.”

We visited seniors today! We brought them some goodies from the bakery and spent time with them.

“I am volunteering in Kavod because it helps me stay active in a hands-on work environment while getting involved with the community. Since I relocated to Winnipeg, volunteering has helped me stay engaged and adapt to the local work culture.”

“I am volunteering at Kavod because I enjoy helping out and helping people in the community. I also like to add some experience to my work history and maybe work fully in this industry. I enjoy the experience.”

Sharon and Luisa celebrating another members birthday at the B’nai Brith Canada Montreal knitting club for seniors, sharing snacks and socializing.

This is Harriet. She saw Kavod’s callout for volunteers on Facebook, and didn’t even realize it was for delivery drivers. Not only did she answer the call willing to help however she was needed, but she showed up with a car full of donations for the store as well!!

At B’nai Brith Canada’s Montreal Seniors Knitting Program, Yudit finished her knitted blanket, which will be sent to the IDF and is already onto her next one. She’s on her fourth blanket!

We like giving back to the community and especially helping the needy and elderly populations.

I’ve been looking for a way to give back to the community that has given so much to me and my family. Bnai Brith Canada is a wonderful organization and I’m proud to help where I can.

I volunteer with B’nai Brith Canada because I’m deeply connected with their mission to support the Jewish community.
Volunteering often brings me a sense of purpose, satisfaction, and joy. Helping others increases my happiness. Volunteering is a great way to meet people, build friendships, and feel part of a community.
Delivering food boxes is a direct and meaningful way to help people. It’s not just about giving food — it’s about showing up for someone and reminding them they’re not alone.
Volunteering makes me feel purposeful and connected. There’s a deep sense of fulfillment that comes from knowing I’ve made even a small difference in someone’s day
Whether I’m helping someone one-on-one or contributing to a larger cause, volunteering often leaves me feeling more hopeful and very grateful.

Volunteering has given me the opportunity to assist those, even in a small way to make a difference in my community.
I’ve met the sweetest most beautiful people through volunteering with B’nai Brith Canada.

I’m volunteering at Kavod because I truly want to be part of a wonderful organization that cares for and supports our community. I’m really looking forward to continuing my volunteer journey and helping Kavod with its future programs!
I’ve been a member of B’nai Brith Canada since I was a student and the organization did a lot of good things back then. It became even more important to help and join again in B’nai Brith Canada’s volunteering and programs. I’m a member of The Men’s Program. – Volunteer for B’nai Brith Canada clothing programs

In Winnipeg, over 1,500 guests joined us at Shaw Park for B’nai Brith Canada’s 17th annual Afternoon with the Goldeyes event!
This special program welcomed clients from more than 80 local service organizations for a day of bustling summer fun — complete with a free hot lunch (thank you, Salisbury House!), a packed swag bag, and, of course, a free ticket to the Goldeyes baseball game!
