TORONTO – B’nai Brith Canada is appalled and outraged after two terrorist gunmen attacked Jews during a Hannukah event today at Bondi beach in Sydney, Australia.
“Our hearts are broken,” B’nai Brith Canada wrote in an impassioned statement posted to social media following the tragedy. “Bondi Beach was not random… Jews were targeted because they were Jews.”
According local media, at least 11 people have died, while 29 remain injured. The horror has sent shockwaves throughout the Jewish world.
Linking the Bondi attacks to a global surge in antisemitism, B’nai Brith Canada called on the Federal Government to take immediate and proactive measures to safeguard Jewish life in this country.
“Waiting for it to happen here is not leadership, it is negligence,” the statement reads.
In the wake of this antisemitic massacre, B’nai Brith Canada is calling on all levels of government to:
- Enforce exisitng hate-crime laws;
- Protect Jewish schools, synagogues, and community spaces;
- Dismantle extremist networks promoting violence and terrorism;
- Name the problem of antisemitism clearly, without excuses or disclaimers;
- Cease permitting Jew-hatred to persist under the guise of anti-Zionism.
“Attacks on Jews anywhere in the world test our society’s moral leadership,” said Simon Wolle, B’nai Brith Canada’s Chief Executive Officer. “Our Government cannot wait for blood to be shed in Canada before it acts.”
