TORONTO – B’nai Brith Canada has lodged a complaint with the York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB) after our investigations indicated that a teacher had used a fake social media account to post explicit antisemitic and violent statements.
In one post, Shawn Hinves, who works as an emergency supply teacher in the district, declared that “there is nothing wrong with resisting Zionists by any means necessary.” He also wrote that “Jewish privilege keeps [Zionists] safe while they destroy everyone else.”
Another message reads, “every Jew in the West has blood on their hands for what Israel is doing.”
B’nai Brith Canada has learned that, after the YCDSB received our complaint, it opened an investigation. We look forward to working with the school board to ensure that staff who promote hate and incite violence are not placed in positions of authority in our educational system.
“Hinves’ abhorrent rhetoric targets all Jews as a collective,” said Richard Robertson, Director of Research and Advocacy for B’nai Brith Canada. “In his posts, he invokes insidious conspiracy theories about Jewish power and encourages harm against Jews because of their perceived responsibility for Israel’s alleged actions.
“Such dehumanizing language is unbecoming of anyone in civil society, let alone an educator, and must not be normalized in Canada.”
