A federal panel assigned to combat anti-Semitism yesterday had no comment on figures showing Jews remain a leading target of hate crimes nationwide. One advocacy group calculated Jews are now 22 times more likely than gentiles to be a crime victim in Canada.
Statistics Canada in updated Police-Reported Crime Statistics In Canada 2025 counted 788 hate crimes against Jews, second only to Blacks (858 crimes) as a leading target. The figures compared to reported offences against LGBTQ people (534), South Asians (483), Arabs (279) Muslims (204) or Indigenous people (54).
“Data further reinforce Canada’s anti-Semitism crisis with Jews targeted at rates disproportionate to any other community,” Noah Shack, CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs, said in a statement. “To put these figures in perspective, a Jewish Canadian is 22 times more likely to be the victim of a hate crime than any other Canadian.”
“Gunfire and firebombing of synagogues and schools, vandalizing businesses and assaulting community members is perpetrated by extremists at home and foreign actors abroad, driven by conspiracy theories and anti-Israel hate,” said CEO Shack. “Governments and authorities must be unequivocal. Nothing can justify these criminal acts targeting Canadians.”
The federal Advisory Council on Rights, Equality and Inclusion had no comment. Cabinet appointed the nine-member panel June 1 to “reassess the nature, scale and drivers of anti-Semitism in Canada across public institutions, workplaces, campuses and online spaces.”
Community advocates had dismissed the appointment of the Advisory Council. “We don’t see a council as a breakthrough,” Simon Wolle, CEO of B’nai Brith Canada, said at the time.
“Canada is not facing an anti-Semitism awareness problem,” said Wolle. “Canada has an anti-Semitism problem. The country has been poisoned with Jew hatred and we need a remedy.”
Conservative MP Roman Baber (York Centre, Ont.) called the announcement an embarrassment. “To the 400,000 Jewish Canadians, I am embarrassed by this Liberal government,” he told the Commons.
MP Baber’s Toronto riding has the fourth-largest Jewish population of any constituency in the country, according to Elections Canada. “Sometimes I think this Prime Minister is trolling us,” he said. “What did he propose to protect the Jewish community? An Advisory Council.”
“That’s the Prime Minister’s solution to synagogues being shot at, thugs harassing seniors’ homes or marching in North York chanting for ‘intifada,’” said Baber. “Liberals love advisory councils. It’s grade-school level.”
